Stredoslovenská energetika, a.s. was established on January 1, 2002. Its sole founder was the Slovak National Property Fund.

Based on the Slovak Republic´s Government Decree No. 538, dated May 22, 2002,  a 49% ownership interest in SSE, held by the the National Property Fund of the SR, was acquired  by Electricité de France International ("EDF") through a direct sale.

EDF entered SSE as a strategic partner on October 31, 2002.
