The formation and starts of Stredoslovenská energetika ("SSE") have their roots in the period between 1920 and 1923, when the first power companies - then referred to as "all-round utility companies"- appeared in the territory of central Slovakia.

The predecessors of SSE were (1) Stredoslovenské elektrárne (i.e. Central Slovakia´s Power Plants Company), at that time a joint-stock company based in Banská Bystrica, which was formed as the first all-round power utility company in Slovakia, and (2) United Power Plants of Slovakia´s North -West, ®ilina. They started to conduct their business activities on April 30, 1923.

An important milestone in their history was January 1961, when they merged, thus forming Stredoslovenské energetické závody, which became a state enterprise after September 1, 1990.

On the last day of December in 2001 the government, through its resolution, cancelled that company without liquidation and as early as January 1, 2002, Stredoslovenská energetika (i.e. SSE) assumed the assets, rights, obligations and liabilities.
