Environmental impacts of electricity generation |
In accordance with the respective provisions of Act No. 656/2004 on Energy Sectors and on amendments to certain acts, SSE informs its customers about the environmental impacts of electricity generated and supplied.
Electricity represents a commonplace aspect of our everyday lives and has a dramatic impact on individuals as well as the entire society. Electricity influences our everyday lives and significantly contributes to the growth of industrial production and the living standard of the population. Electricity is considered to be the finest form of energy and Stredoslovenská energetika ensures its permanent availability to you.
Nuclear power plants generate electricity based on nuclear fission (natural or enriched uranium). The share of nuclear energy in the supply of SSE is the highest because nuclear energy accounts for 67% of the production of Slovakia's key electricity producer - Slovenské elektrárne. As a by-product of electricity generation, nuclear power plants also supply heat.
Thermal power plants represent sources generating electricity and heat on the basis of fossil fuel combustion. The primary source of heat and electricity generation is the combustion of coal, gas or mazut.
Hydroelectric power plants are the only renewable source of electricity enjoying considerable share in the portfolio of energy sources; as an additional function to electricity generation, these plants help prevent floods.
Other sources in this overview include, in particular, industrial power plants and wind power plants. As a priority, industrial power plants supply electricity (and heat) to the major industrial companies and since they may also supply excess electricity to the distribution system, these power plants represent marginal sources.
Since the sources of the Slovenské elektrárne company comprise a major part of primary sources, the information concerning their environmental impact can also be found in its web presentation.
Environmental protection rates among the important factors for formulating the energy policy, the goal of which is to:
- alleviate the impact of electricity generation and consumption on the environment,
- support energy saving and efficiency,
- increase the share of cleaner energy generation and consumption.
The global trend adopted by countries all over the world commits the individual states to reduce air pollution levels. The commitment has also been accepted by the Slovak Republic which, following EU accession, is gradually reaching the environmental standards and limits accepted across the EU, thanks to strict legislation. The limits are determined by the Kyoto Protocol - an international agreement aimed at reducing gas emissions responsible for climatic changes.
Stredoslovenská energetika is a modern energy company and is aware of its environmental responsibility. It is therefore our objective to support energy efficiency, rational use of electricity and expansion of electricity generation from renewable sources.
