Air conditioning = Heat pump?

Modern air conditioning devices capable of switching the direction of heat transfer as needed, which are offered to you also by SSE, are a combination of an air conditioning unit and a heat pump. They are characterised by high energy efficiency, as they do not generate energy, but rather only transfer it from one place to another. You can utilise the heat obtained from such a combined air conditioning device and a heat pump as an efficient and highly flexible supplementary heating source, which, however, cannot substitute for the basic heat source. Such a device can heat your room very fast and can respond equally fast to a need for cooling, which is useful especially in transitional periods of unstable weather.

Air conditioning design and selection

In order for air conditioning to function optimally, it needs to be designed properly. In this process, the required scope of internal air condition adjustment as well as the space and purpose of the premises to be air conditioned comprise the decisive elements. When designing and choosing the air conditioning and its capacity, it is advisable to consult professionals (suppliers and installation companies) to prevent problems in the system operation.

If the capacity of a system is too high, it can cause draughts, temperature fluctuations, but also increased costs of operation, as the device is turned on and off frequently. To the contrary, if the system's capacity is too low, the required temperature will not be reached and the air conditioning will be turned on permanently, which also increases the costs of operation, leading to poor efficiency.

There are various types of air conditioning systems available. The so-called split devices, with one indoor and one outdoor unit, are suitable for the air-conditioning of a single room. The benefit of such a system lies within a high flexibility of mounting. In order to air-condition multiple rooms, so called multisplit systems are used, which use multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit. When one intends to install air conditioning, it is important to assess the possibilities for the mounting of the outdoor unit (roof, façade, terrace, balcony...) as well as the condensate drain - considering neighbours, the building owner and the construction authority.

Tariff recommendation

Air conditioning uses a principle similar to that of a heat pump; it is, however, not to be confused with a heat pump serving as a main heating source. The installation of an air conditioning device with combined cooling and heating functions does not constitute an entitlement to the awarding of the D37 tariff.

In view of the supplementary nature of the air conditioning device's heat pump mode, and considering the nature of the actual electricity offtake, the offered air conditioning device may only be combined with those tariffs already awarded. In the event of using electricity for the preparation of hot service water or for heating, other tariffs may also be used.

Several tips on how to use air conditioning properly

• human body thermal regulation reacts adversely to great temperature fluctuations, therefore the temperature of the air-conditioned premises should not be lower than the external temperature by more than 5-7 °C.
• the recommended optimum room temperature is 24°C - 28°C.
• cold air descends down to the ground naturally, therefore it is not necessary to use the "fan" function to aim the cool air directly at a bed or a sofa.
• do not cover the air conditioning units and do not dwell directly in front of their outlets.
• apart from the room temperature, the humidity and the rate of air circulation in the room also comprise important elements - we perceive an increase in the rate of air circulation by 0.1 m/s as a decrease in air temperature by 2-3 °C.
• regularly inspect the filters' condition, clean them or replace if needed. A fouled air filter increases electricity consumption.
• air conditioning also provides sufficient room ventilation; if you open windows, you lower its effectiveness and increase energy consumption.
• if a building has better thermal insulation, air conditioning with a lower output will suffice.
